Postmodernism is specifically a progression from the principles of Modernism, which rejects traditions in favor of connecting to primal impulses within each individual artist.
Postmodernism has been defined in different ways by different people, but, in this forum, the movement is best described as a reconciliation between Modernism and Traditionalism. Postmodernism allows the artist to be informed by the past and to resynthesize things from the past in novel ways, which, in turn, are not bound in any way by tradition.
Works of the past are often distilled to their most essential elements before they are given consideration as inspiration for new art and design. In the same way, Postmodernists are able to draw on the collective past of many individual cultures.
